Domestic Violence thrives when we are silent. But if we take a stand and work together, we can end domestic violence. Throughout the month of October, help CSADV to raise awareness about domestic violence and join in our efforts to end violence.

Here is what you can do:

Your company can help by holding a “Jeans Day” at your office. Pick a day or several days throughout the month of October where your employees can wear blue jeans to work for a $5 donation to CSADV. We are willing to provide a speaker and/or information brochures if requested.

Can’t do “Jeans Day”? No problem! Consider making a donation to CSADV or even volunteering your time.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Your company can help by holding a “Jeans Day” at your office. We ask that you pick a day or several days throughout the month of October where your employees can wear blue jeans to work for a $5 donation to CSDAV. Dine at Minerva’s October 5 to Benefit CSADV!

Join CSADV and the Sioux City Police for a Tailgate Party!

The Siouxland Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault along with CSADV and the Sioux City Police Department will be holding a tailgate party at the Morningside College/Briar Cliff College football game at Olson Stadium on the Morningside campus on October 22 prior to the game.

There will be food and other activities and at half time the crowd will stand for a moment of silence to honor all of the individuals effected by domestic violence.

Spotlight on Advocacy and Counseling

Advocacy is based on a philosophy of respect, confidentiality, and support. As advocates, we hope to widen a survivor’s possible choices and provide the support necessary to promote safety. This respect allows each individual the right to determine the course of her or his own life.

Counseling provides brief, solution-based peer support in a one to one environment.

Crisis intervention, on the phone or in person to stabilize emotions, clarify issues, provide support, and explore options to meet the individual’s immediate needs.

CRISIS INTERVENTION INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

Assessing risk and/or danger
Assessing suicide risk
Assessment of needs
Listening
Establishing rapport and communication
Validating feelings and providing support
Identifying the major problems
Safety planning
Referrals
Information about legal rights and remedies
Exploring possible alternatives
Formulating an action plan

CASE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Ongoing and long-term safety planning
Law enforcement assistance
Referrals for legal remedies and services
Referrals for public assistance services, including job training and support services
Referrals for short-term, transitional and/or permanent housing
Referrals for child care services and parenting education

Spotlight on Outreach and Education

At CSADV we believe in being a good community partner and we strive to end violence through education and outreach. Often violence is a learned practice and a cycle that repeats itself. By creating awareness and providing education we hope break that cycle.

In addition to the direct services CSADV provides, our community outreach program strives to create awareness and educate the community concerning the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child victimization. To accomplish this, we offer education to different groups within the community and we have implemented a comprehensive informational campaign concerning the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child victimization.

CSADV provides educational opportunities to the communities we serve. Educational presentations are available to all segments of the community—schools, colleges, civic groups, religious group and businesses—and can be modified to best target your group and fit your schedule. Presentations are informative and assist the public in becoming more aware of the issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault.

CSADV provides educational prevention programming for preschool children through college level. The educational programs incorporate role plays, skits, live characters, printed materials, video, discussion between the presenter and audience, and much more. It is our belief that education is vital to ending child and adult victimization.

CSADV capital campaign nears completion

Last month CSADV launched a capital campaign and as we approach our goal we still need public support.

CSADV provides two separate and distinct programs to individuals and families affected by domestic violence; Shelter and the Comprehensive Domestic Abuse (community) program. The CSADV shelter now serves 19 counties in NW Iowa, 2 counties in Nebraska and 1 county in South Dakota at our site in Sioux City. We provided shelter to 644 children and adults in 2015. The CSADV Comprehensive Domestic Abuse services cover Woodbury and Plymouth counties and provided counseling and support to another 1,083 survivors.

The building adjacent to our current location has become available for purchase and seems ideal for the provision of comprehensive services and administrative space.

We are very close to our goal.

Spotlight on CSADV Volunteers

Organizations often say that volunteers are crucial to their mission. At CSADV that statement couldn’t be more accurate. In fact, the important work that we do in the community and working with survivors wouldn’t be possible without our network of volunteers. At CSADV we have two roles for volunteers, direct and indirect volunteers.

Direct volunteers go through a 36-hour training program to become certified survivor advocates. This training is at no cost to the volunteer. After completion of the training the new volunteers often shadow employees or veteran volunteers. These volunteer advocates often work with survivors and their children in Shelter, man the crisis line or are scheduled to take an “on call” shift with our pager system.

It is our commitment to the community to respond to calls from a hospital or police station within 30 minutes of being alerted to a domestic or sexual assault and our volunteers are often the first tier in this pager system. They are often the first point of contact with a survivor in this critical and highly sensitive time.

Indirect volunteers are not required to complete the advocate training. None-the-less, their role is equally important to the agency. These volunteers help with critical fundraising needs, help distribute agency materials and posters for those that might need help and help out with administrative tasks that might otherwise take away from an advocate’s time spent with a survivor.

CSADV launches capital campaign

CSADV is beginning a capital campaign for expansion of the crucial services we provide. CSADV provides two separate and distinct programs to individuals and families affected by domestic violence; Shelter and the Comprehensive Domestic Abuse (community) program. The CSADV shelter now serves 19 counties in NW Iowa, 2 counties in Nebraska and 1 county in South Dakota at our site in Sioux City. We provided shelter to 644 children and adults in 2015. The CSADV Comprehensive Domestic Abuse services cover Woodbury and Plymouth counties and provided counseling and support to another 1,083 survivors.

Our shelter space is often over capacity and we then secure hotel rooms to provide safety to survivors of domestic violence and their children. At the same time, outreach counselors in the domestic abuse program struggle to find space to meet with survivors who come in for counseling and advocacy services. The building adjacent to our current location has become available for purchase and seems ideal for the provision of comprehensive services and administrative space.

The leadership and generosity of the Gleeson family and Klinger Companies have provided an initial $100,000, with a challenge to the community to raise the additional $100,000 by July 29, 2016 to make the purchase possible.
