Volunteer Opportunities

On-Call Volunteer: be able to respond to crisis at the hospital or police department during the evening hours 5pm-5am (M-F) or on the weekends 5am-5pm/5pm-5am as it works with your schedule. Volunteer must have reliable transportation and be accountable for days which they sign up. Must be comfortable being in the medical/social service setting and working with different agencies (i.e.: police) in the community. Volunteer will work closely with staff until they are comfortable responding by themselves.

Group Support: Assist with facilitating support group for survivors of domestic abuse. Volunteer must have strong communication and listening skills and be able to maintain focus of topic being discussed.

Educational Program: Certified volunteers may assist in this area by helping with small groups during discussions in classroom presentations. Volunteer must be familiar with the models and curriculum that SafePlace uses in prevention and outreach programming, comfortable speaking to groups of youth, and be available during school hours.

Shelter Program: Spend time with adults and children residing in the shelter. Assist with mealtime, craft activities, reading to children holiday parties, etc.

• Translation of materials: Survivors may be going through a legal process related to a criminal or civil issue or their citizenship status. In any of those scenarios, there are often many documents that need translation either from English to Spanish or vice versa. Survivors may also need assistance with translation of applications for community services. Assist survivors with making first contact with community agencies and resources. For example, pre-natal, medical, setting up utilities, signing up for ESL classes, etc.
• Assist with childcare for support groups and individual meetings.

Educational Program: Assist Education Coordinator with presentations at area schools. Volunteering in this area may include putting packets of information together for use during classroom presentations, cutting out or making samples of projects to be used in classroom presentations, making posters, writing down information or answers during discussions in classroom presentations, or tallying pre and post-tests from classroom presentations.

Community Outreach: Help at various community fairs by staffing the agency table and distributing agency materials. Assisting staff to distribute posters and brochures to local businesses and agencies on a continuous basis. A strong connection to local businesses and agencies and the ability to make and maintain relationships is helpful.

Clerical Duties: Assist staff with general office work, occasional data entry and filing. Volunteer must be comfortable using Microsoft programs and be comfortable using a fax and copy machine.

Fundraising: Assist in providing support during fundraisers. Various job duties, times, and conditions vary. Local groups are encouraged to participate.
